A different kind of help, when antidepressants haven’t been enough.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free treatment for depression and other conditions. Delivered by our specialist psychiatry team, supported by Medicare for eligible patients, and you go home the same day.

What is TMS?

TMS — Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation — uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. A small coil rests against your scalp during the session. You stay awake, sit comfortably, and can read, listen to music, or simply rest.

It’s not ECT. There’s no anaesthetic, no seizure, no memory effects. You leave the appointment as you arrived and continue with your day.

For people whose depression hasn’t lifted with antidepressants, TMS offers a meaningfully different path — one that works on the brain’s mood circuits directly, rather than through the bloodstream.

Who TMS can help

TMS is most commonly used for:

  • Major depressive disorder, particularly when one or more antidepressants haven’t brought enough relief.

  • Treatment-resistant depression — typically defined as not responding to two or more antidepressant trials.

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) — for selected patients, using a dedicated protocol.

  • Anxiety symptoms that co-occur with depression.

It isn’t right for everyone. Our psychiatrists assess each person individually — looking at your history, current treatments, and any reasons TMS might not be safe or suitable.

How a course of TMS works

A typical course runs over 4 to 6 weeks, with daily sessions on weekdays. Each session is around 20 minutes, depending on the protocol your psychiatrist recommends.

Twice-weekly sessions Monday to Friday over 17 to 18 weeks.

Why Blue Fig Clinic

TMS is a specialist treatment:

  • Every TMS course is overseen by a consultant psychiatrist.

  • Treatment plans are individual — we don’t run a one-protocol-fits-all clinic.

  • You stay connected to your treating psychiatrist throughout the course.

  • We work alongside your GP, existing psychiatrist, or psychologist where appropriate.

The next step is one decision: book an assessment.

The assessment isn’t a commitment to treatment. It’s an honest conversation about your history, what’s been tried, what’s left to try, and whether TMS belongs on that list.
